Applications are now being accepted for Yakima Valley College’s Bachelor of Applied Science in IT Networking — System Administration (BASIT) program to start classes in fall quarter 2024. The priority deadline to apply is Friday, June 28, final deadline is August 30.
YVC’s BASIT degree prepares students for a variety of information technology careers such as network or database administrator, network support specialist, computer system analyst, information system manager and system engineer.
Graduate Horacio Hernandez, who earned his BASIT degree this June was excited to be able to work toward his goals at YVC.
“In the beginning I came to YVC for English [Language] Acquisition. However, in the process of learning English, I found a great opportunity for accomplishing my goal in life, which is to get my bachelor’s degree,” said Hernandez.
Now he’s ready to enter the workforce and gain a real-world application of what he’s learned over the past five years.
“New challenges will come; however, I am ready to approach them and to be successful as a professional in the IT field,” said Hernandez.
Careers offer competitive pay with an average wage in the Yakima area of $41.30 per hour or $85,900 annually, and a Washington state average of $50.59 per hour or $105,240 annually for network and computer systems administrators according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics as of May 2023.
The BASIT program is designed for students who have earned an applied associate degree and desire a pathway to a bachelor of applied science degree. YVC’s program combines lower division technical and transfer courses with upper division credits in information technology, resulting in an application-oriented, four-year degree. Full-time students can finish the program in two years, once prerequisites have been met.
